Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/4 inches (3.18 cm) in height overall consisting of a silver broad arrow (a form of arrowhead) point to base and stem partially split vertically wedge-wise, below two single silver wings, the ulnas resting on the lower edges of the broad arrow and the feathers raised and turned inward, the tips of the top feather of each wing touching and the area within the device formed by the broad arrow and the wings of blue.  Attached below the device a blue scroll inscribed "WINGS OF VICTORY" in silver letters.

Symbolism
The wings and broad arrow are symbols of flight, the broad arrow also alluding to aggressiveness and readiness.  The stem has been partially split so that the broad arrow simulates two "V's" (5's) and refers to the unit's numerical designation "55."  The "V's" also allude to victory.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 15 December 1966.

Note:  This Battalion was never authorized a coat of arms.
